U.S. Looking for Tougher Sanctions For North Korea |
By: Matthew Bailey
North Korea had tested six short range missiles last week after carrying out a nuclear bomb test May 25th and before that North Korea launched what the United States Navy said was a long range missile that could carry nuclear weapons. According to South Korean media reports, the North Korean regime is preparing to launch at least three medium range missiles and a ballistic rocket.
Tensions have increased around the region since North Korea tested a nuclear weapon and fired six short-range missiles, prompting international condemnation and a likely United Nations censure.
North Korea threatened to attack U.S. warships moving near its coasts in the escalation of tensions with threats by the major powers to put tougher sanctions on North Korea for testing nuclear weapons.
Calling for diplomacy Barrack Obama said, “Diplomacy has to involve the other side engaging in serious way, and we have not seen that reaction from North Korea.”
In a different note, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton while in Washington said “We are going to add to the consequences that North Korea will face.” She also said “the U.S. takes very seriously its commitments to defend South Korea and Japan, its principal allies in the region.”
The United States is pressing for the Security Council to adopt a U.N. resolution that would further restrain North Korea’s capacity to finance it’s military and nuclear ambitions.
