NFL May Have Financial Shortfall Due To Economy In 2009 |
By: Matthew Bailey
As it stands, businesses and individuals alike have not faired as well as they would like in the prior months of the current economic downfall. Given that businesses and individuals are having troubles, there would be no reason to believe that the National Football League won’t.
The good news for the NFL, the NFL Network may be leaving Comcast’s sports tier. The bad news, the NFL Network may be leaving Comcast altogether as the. The NFL Network’s contract with Comcast ends in April, and the NFL has said that it would not cut a new deal that would keep the channel on Comcast’s sports tier.
Many of the owners are beginning to lose patients with the NFL Network chief Steve Bornstein. Some are saying that the product itself stinks. Some of the on air line up are Mike Mayock, Alex Flanagan, Solomon Wilcots, Paul Burmeister and Steve Mariucci, who are great personalities. Others are just plain boring some say. Roger Goodell says, “We think it’s terrific product and we’ve heard that from fans.”, and then goes on to say that the NFL network is not loosing money, and then says: “We’re going to be patient. We’re going to be determined and make sure it gets the broadest possible exposure, which we think is what fans want.”
Should Comcast drop NFL Network, it would result in a loss of 2 million NFL network subscribers.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell gave a stern warning about fans in the largely down economy for league officials. “Can they continue to afford to go to an NFL game?” Goodell asked. Was this a hint to lowers ticket prices?
The league is looking at a clash with the players union on the collective bargaining agreement.
“We’re not immune from what’s going on out there in the economy,” says Goodell at the site of the NLF’s Super Bowl.
The league has laid people off, so have teams of the league. “We have to cut our costs,” says Goodell.
Goodwell had offered no solution, but the league will try to cut costs across the board to make the NFL model more conducive.

I think the NFL is greedy. I pay for the sports tier and do not feel that Comcast should give it to everyone that is on basic and then jack everyone rates up, I ask the NFL, is thier channel worth 60 dollars a year for 8 games at 5 bucks a month? I pay for the sports tier because I am a fan. I don’t see how they say they should get ESPN money.
