The House’s top two Democrats, Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland said Monday that some of the behavior of health care overhaul opponents had been “simply un-American.”
Protesters have disrupted some town-hall meetings held by lawmakers, in some cases the protesters were shouting down the speakers of the events. The police have had to intervene in some cases and there are allot videos of the events that have circulated widely on YouTube along with cable news.
“These disruptions are occurring because opponents are afraid not just of differing views but of the facts themselves,” said Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland supported her statement. “Drowning out opposing views is simply un-American. Drowning out the facts is how we failed at this task for decades.”
“I, like most Americans, would find that kind of characterization of citizens exercising their First Amendment rights to be offensive,” Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., told FOX News. “There’s nothing more American than letting your elected representatives know how you feel about important issues facing the nation.”
House Republican Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, released a statement calling the charge “outrageous and reprehensible.”
What is more Un-American than calling another person Un-American for using their freedom of speech? How much leadership does this show, as Pelosi is the House Leader. Is Nancy Polosi being a good leader or has she gone to far? I would not want to see what the young people that are learning from her do after they are elected into their terms in the House, if they so make it to that point, and some will with no doubt.
