Vienna, Virginia — Everest College students, teachers and staff dedicated their time to the Food Allergy Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN) and made over 4,600 ribbons on March 12th for the Allergy Awareness Walks. The school’s initial goal was 2,000 ribbons.
This was a one day event, where everyone participated; students measured 7’’ pieces of ribbon, cut and glued them together. Heather Busicchia, FAAN Walk Administrator, and Laura Cannon, FAAN Southeast Regional Manager, were overwhelmed by the positive student response and eagerness to help. The ribbons will be distributed at the 45 FAAN Walks for Food Allergy across the country. The yearly goal for FAAN is 55,000 ribbons. A monthly Make-a-Ribbon, Save-a-Life Day will be held at the Everest College in Tysons Corner to promote allergy awareness and contribute to FAAN’s goal of 55,000 ribbons.
Food allergies are on the rise, with as many as 15 million people affected by food allergies. Many of the students and staff who participated in the Make-a-Ribbon, Save-a-Life Day either had a food allergy or knew someone who had one. Top food allergens include peanuts, fish, shellfish, milk and eggs.
Everest College became involved with FAAN after one the Student Ambassadors proposed the idea to her instructor. President Sheri Delozier said, “This is a great opportunity for our students to learn how to get involved with their community and make a difference.”
Academic Dean Peter DePascale said, “We are excited to partner up with FAAN to help promote food allergy awareness and help them reach their goals.” Andreia Lucanu, Student Success Coordinator, and Tony Villeda, Campus Student Loan Specialist, will coordinate all of the monthly allergy awareness events.
The school will have monthly Make-a-Ribbon, Save-a-Life Days, along with Jeans for Food Allergies Days where staff and students can wear jeans if they make a contribution to FAAN. On September 22nd, the Tysons Corner Campus will be a sponsor in the Northern Virginia Walk for Food Allergy. The school plans to raise $5,000 to donate to FAAN before September’s walk.
